Abstract

The concept of crime is as ancient as the human civilisation is. Since the time of primitive society different modes of dealing with the offenders or the deviants are used. With the passage of time different theories with regard to the punishment or treatment of the deviant have been applied. Different school of thoughts prevailed and separate theory of punishment were laid. Deterrent punishment, retributive punishment etc were the most prevalent in the earlier times. Later there has been a realisation that the crime and punishment has to be ultimately assessed and treated by and within society itself. After the punishment since the offender has to make his way back home with his family and community, naturally the community and family have to play a role in realigning him back to the society. This gave rise to the new theory of Reformation, and for this correctional programs were initiated and practised across the globe in the form of probation.
