Agricultural trade in international market makes a significant contribution to the foreign exchange earning thorough substitution of imports by domestic production and by expanding exports. But it could not be understood what are the reasons behind that and what are determents of India’s export. Though, there are some studies on the determinants of India’s export but the answer is in-conclusive. Therefore, the specific objectives of the study are (i) to examine the temporal changes in commodity complex of exports and imports of agriculture and non-agriculture sector in the pre and post WTO period, (ii) to estimate the commodity/ group wise growth and instability of imports and exports, and the performance of agricultural and non-agricultural sectors, and (iii) to examine the performance of agricultural trade and total merchandise. In this study, the growth trend and instability of exports and imports have been estimated and analyzed for two periods; pre WTO (1985-1994) and Post WTO (1995-2009) period.
